His bio is below, as well as those who have put themselves forward for the positions Vice President English and Member-at-Large. We are still seeking a Graduate Student Representative. President – Geoffrey Rockwell
Bio: Dr. Geoffrey Martin Rockwell is a Professor of Philosophy and Digital Humanities and Director of the Kule Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Alberta. He has published on videogames, textual visualization and analysis, ethics of big data, and computing in the humanities including a book from the MIT Press, Hermeneutica: Computer-Assisted Interpretation in the Humanities (2016). He is the project lead of the Text Analysis Portal for Research <tapor.ca> and co-developer of Voyant Tools <voyant-tools.org>, a suite of text analysis tools, for which he and his co-developer were awarded the CSDH/SCHN 2017 Outstanding Contribution Award.
Geoffrey Rockwell has a long history with the CSDH/SCHN other digital humanities organizations. He was a Director of its predecessor the Consortium for Computing in the Humanities from 1998 to 2005 and Vice President from 2000 to 2010 of what became CSDH. He has also been on the executive of the ACH, on the executive of CenterNet and chaired the ADHO Implementation Committee.
Vice President – English
Candidate 1 – Lai-Tze Fan
I am an Assistant Professor of Digital Media & Rhetoric in the University of Waterloo’s English Department. In addition to researching in the fields of the digital humanities, media theory, maker culture, and interactive literature, I serve as Associate Editor and Director of Communications of Electronic Book Review (EBR), one of the oldest academic journals on the Internet. I am also the only Canadian member of the Steering Committee of MediArXiv, the international Open Archive for Media, Film, and Communication Studies. For the position of CSDH-SCHN’s Vice-President, English, whose duties include attending monthly meetings and organizing the Awards Committee, I would draw upon my ten+ years experience in academic service, including my work in open access and alternative platforms for non-exclusionary research dissemination. I have previously served as a member of the CSDH-SCHN’s Program Committee for Congress 2016 (Calgary), Congress 2017 (Toronto), and Congress 2019 (Vancouver). Already comfortable with the structure of CSDH-SCHN monthly meetings, time-sensitive requests, peer review, coordination with existing executive members, and with the annual conference at Congress, I am very interested to be considered for this position and to contribute to the DH-in-Canada-and-abroad community. Candidate 2 – Constance Crompton
I have been a member of the CSDH/SCHN executive since 2015, when I joined as a member at large. I have served as the VP-English since 2016 and was the conference program chair in 2018. I am an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa, where I direct the Humanities Data Lab. I am co-PI, with Michelle Schwartz, of the Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada project and serve as an associate director of the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria. If elected by the membership, I would be delighted to continue to serve the Digital Humanities community and to work with stakeholders to better understand and support our scholarship, and to amplify, share, and celebrate Digital Humanities scholarship in Canada.
Member-at-Large
Candidate 1 – Harvey Quamen
Harvey Quamen is an Associate Professor of English and Digital Humanities at the University of Alberta and is the Academic Director of the Digital Scholarship Centre there. He researches database culture, open access humanities, and data visualization. He has two monographs in-progress, Relational Databases for Humanists, co-authored with Jon Bath, and Math for Humanists: The Analytic Art, co-authored with Matt Huculak. He has been a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College, London, and has participated in several large collaborative research teams, including Editing Modernism in Canada, the Canadian Writers Research Collaboratory, and the Implementing New Knowledge Environments Project. He would like to facilitate more collaboration between digital centres and the scholarly associations in which we participate.
Candidate 2 – Barbara Bordelajo
After having a very positive experience as program committee chair for the 2019 CSDH/SCHN conference, I am keen to remain involved with the Society and to continue contributing to the DH community in Canada. My interest focuses on the development and maintenance of collaborative communities, and my experience is uncommon in this regard as I have lived in different countries where I created links and relationships with other scholars. I have been a member of the executive of the European Association for Digital Humanities (of which I now serve as Secretary with a term finishing in December 2019), I served on the steering committee of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations, I’m part of the editorial board of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities, and have managed various international collaborations.
